Best line

The scene when Mikey's and Sandy's dad returns and says "I'm back": Mikey's response to it : "You were gone?" combined with the expressionless face of a very confused boy. It never fails to give me goosebumps!

That line struck home with me. I was about that age during that era. I've said the same thing to my Dad occasionally.. It was a complicated time to be that age.. When your father is absent frequently you tend to lose track of his business trips. I was equally confused during that period.. I'm still confused sometimes. I think that's one of the reasons I find the movie so compelling, it was like going back in time in a very real way. The woodsy exurbs, the upper-middle class average people, the 'anything goes' mentality.. I still think things were better then.

At that age I was a bit like Elijah. I might have been even more independent even. My parents were divorced and my father, who I lived with, wasn't around allot with his work and social calendar. My pops would leave me money and I had a credit card for emergencies. I really didn't notice if my pops was around or not. By 16-18 we lead two totally individual lives under one roof. My father became more like a emotionally distant roomate.

" A family can hurt each other without knowing it." It's not only so true but also sums up the entire movie before it even starts.
