Favorite Drama of the 1990s

Why this was not nominated for Best Picture is beyond me. This is Ang Lee's finest work. I have not seen a movie that better captures the emptiness of suburban life. I am deeply saddened at the end of the picture because I realize that the human condition, as experienced by a lot of people, was captured perfectly on screen. The script is incredibly nuanced, the ice storm was shot beautifully, and the score is fantastic. Not to mention the acting. We're dealing with the highest caliber of filmmaking here.

I couldn't agree more. After seeing the movie I knew a best picture nomination was a long-shot for a film this downbeat and cynical, but I conider it a travesty that it failed to pick up a single nomination. I think it's easily the best film of 1997, Ang Lee's finest movie and probably my favourite American film of the 90s. The period detail is extraordinary - music, costumes, art direction and sound gel perfectly to create a period feel, the film looks like it was made in the 70s - and every performance is wonderful.

Agree that this was a great movie, one of those 'perfectly cast' flicks. Looking back some 12 years after it was made, it was fun to see all of the 'stars' who were unknowns at the time it was made, including Christina Ricci, Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood, Toby Maguire. And the way director Ang Lee portrayed a perfect 1973 - era "Stepford Wives" collection: tall, slender, angular suburban WASP's.....Signourney Weaver, Joan Allen, Allison Janney. (And those clothes!)

This was a great movie, and I got to see it via the STARZ/Encore network at just the perfect time: Thanksgiving...the holiday that was used as a focal point for the movie. This movie, along with Jodie Foster's "Home for the Holidays" would make a great 'double feature'..........for those of us who

HATE Thanksgiving Dinner Rituals with the 'Fambily" and HATE watching football, football, football.........on Thanksgiving!!!

It's my favourite movie. Period.

It really is beyond belief why the Academy passed completely on this film. It's just so impeccably well realised in all respects with so much to say and easily the best film of 1997.
