Would this film have worked in a different time period?

A great drama hands down. I loved this film. But I was wondering if this movie would have worked just as well, had it not taken place in 1973. Was the setting that vital to the story. What if it took place in the 80s, or 90s? I can see that it would'nt have worked in 2014 (too much technology).

What do you think?

Hmmmmm, this is early 70s all the way.

Marvel comics, Frank Zappa, key parties, toe socks and hippy pastors = early 1970s.

I think it was a commentary on what happened when "free love" hits affluence and bored suburbia, so pre-Aids 1973 is a good simmering-to-boiling point. I personally go wild for the fashions and architecture...and was telling my hubby last night that now in 2014 Elenas maxi-skirt looks totally "nowadays" much more than in 1997=at the film's release, same with talk of of "the moustache cup" which are hipster commonplace today.

Doesn't work in the now at all. Nothing new to offer. Just my simple opinion. !!
