Key party?
So were all the adults at the party swingers? Were they meant to go off and "enjoy the evening together", or just get to know someone new?

share That's the absurdity of it. Upper middle-class neighborhoods aren't that obvious. Why didn't they just put a spot-light on their house. It was as goofy looking as those stupid glasses everyone was wearing.
"He sent the rain."
"Who sent the fire?"
were you around for the 70's?
bell bottoms, window pane designs in pants. leisure suits. neru jackets were still holding on but barely, even ocassional love beads. those glasses were the style - drinking and eyewear.

To their credit, no one was forced to participate, & most of them already knew one another.
When the guests first arrived at the party, I'm not sure if they all knew that they'd been invited to a "wife swap" party. LOL!
Seems like most participated, but not sure if they'd all planned to join in, from the start.
Of course some of the guests were indeed swingers (& we could tell who those were), but seems like some did it just to fit in, or because they wanted to seem "hip". (??)
If you really take a close look at everyone in the party you can tell that maybe half remain to the end. At the key party are 11 men/10 women and there are easy outfits to spot that are not at the key party part of the night (all the gray haired men/women, lady in red one piece, woman in sweater vest with round glasses, the man who was talking to Janey when Ben approached, etc, etc) You only want to do this if you get bored, but trust me.
The funny part for me was when I started to watch the scene closely is when Ben and Elena enter, there is a strawberry blond woman with Rick (red turtle neck under his sports jacket) and I wondered if they were just waiting for the hostess to turn her back so that they could grab their keys and run! But Rick left with a different woman that was probably his real wife.
Edit: I will have to pull out the novel again but my recollection is that no one at the key party had an enjoyable encounter.
