shareOther than this early film, Scarlett just doesn't seem to have developed much of an emotional range as an actress in any of her work. At thirteen, she seemed genuine as well as innocent and more capable of expressing herself, as in this film. But, I definitely agree with your comment that she oftentimes portrays a flat, distant personna in most of her films. I don't follow actors' personal lives at all so I don't have any sense of how she actually is as a person day-to-day (the gossip stream is decidedly inaccurate in reporting anything realistic).
Unfortunately, I think she has a lot of limitations as an actress. Over the past ten years, she seems to have been molded into the starlet/fashionista type of personna. The innocence shown in this performance for "The Horse Whisperer" is most definitely gone.
While I really enjoyed her performance and chemistry with Bill Murray in "Lost
in Translation", I've been singularly unimpressed with any of her other roles beyond these two films.
But, who knows! She's only 30 and already has over 50 films under her belt. Not bad! Perhaps she'll improve significantly as she ages -- I hope so. However, I don't feel like she's developing many strong or unique acting 'chops' that contribute much to the films she's in.
I really feel she would greatly benefit from serious, intensive study at some organization like "Actors Studio" to broaden and improve the palette she draws from for future roles. Perhaps she'll just continue to be a great lookin' 'babe' who delivers so-so performances. Clearly, she's destined to a monied, decent life with many creature comforts. Good for her -- she's makin' hay while the sun shines!
Hollywood churns out these types of actors. She certainly has a long life of acting ahead and, hopefully, she'll have a decent personal life -- that's the most difficult part for any 'Hollywood' star . . . I have several famous family members in the music/entertainment biz and they have each had multiple, somewhat messy divorces. It ain't easy but it does offer many advantages!
