is it normal for young people to be out riding like the beginning?

Just curious as I know nada of horse riding norms...

my first thought when the scene came on, even before anything bad happened was that it seemed a really bad idea for two gals so young to be out riding by themselves.

Then on top of that, the conditions were obviously bad as well... recipe for disaster.

When I went to my uncles ranch in eastern Oregon. His sons and daughters were up early in the morning on their horses riding around the ranch. And they do it rain, snow or shine.

The problem was the two girls took a short cut up a hill that the horses had trouble going up. They should have gotten off the horses and walked them back down the hill.

I agree with Eddie. The horses were clearly having trouble, but the girls were so caught up in their game to really notice it and just kept urging them on.

Yes it's normal. I grew up riding horses with my friends from about 7 on up. starting riding at around 4.

By the time we were the ages of the gals portrayed in the movie we would go quite some distance from home.

As for as riding horses being dangerous-i would say not any more so than riding a skateboard (that is probably potentially more dangerous), a bike, going for a jog. However not exercising probably causes more cases of ill children at young ages than the dangers of doing so. People are paranoid this generation and would rather their kids watch tv or play games on the computer.

Depends on where you are. In Europe young riders usually go out only with an adult or an instructor. Also never would people go out when there is a chance for icy conditions and never should you go up a steep hill like that, not even in fresh snow. Only horses with special shoes or shoeless can go out in the snow and you would have to have dependable relaxed horses. If you have no choice and you need to go up a hill like that, you get of your horse and lead it. I know its a movie but it still irks me how irresponsible these girls are...

Yes. You don't need to be a certain age to ride and you don't need a license.
If you own a horse and spend a lot of time around them, you know how to handle them and you don't need to wait for your parents.

You are right females should not be allowed out of the house at that age

My daughter is 4 years old and she rides. I believe it mostly depends on how experienced you are and on the bond you have with your horse. For example, i don't think you should take a horse you've never ridden before on a long ride.
Then again, the girls in this movie had some experience, i believe, but they weren't paying attention to their horses.
