It is a male brown rat (Rattus Norvegicus), also known as laboratory rat. It is great pet and you don´t need to take it outdoors like dog. It is better to have more than one, because they are social animals. I myself have two female rats.

Doris was a male rat? What was the actor rat another Lassie? sorry for the pun but Lassie was supposedly a female and Timmy said hey girl but all the dogs were males.
But anyway the rat looked White to me, not brown.
