Upon viewing this film for the first time in many many years am I the only one who thought Mr. Jernigan looked like he was going to snap at a moment's notice and was just ready to *beep* someone up?

No. I was thinking the same thing. He did have a rather "unhinged" look.

There certainly is something rough, distant and cold about him. F.e., the part when they're at their house (wondering who called the cops when Beaupre was in the first house) and Unger asks Jernigan what his opinion is... oh my... the cold stare... well, it's too much to say I freaked out, but something was definitely different there...

I agree, he looked like he was about to loose his *beep* at a moment's notice.

Beaupre was just the leader he gave the orders, he was not that scary. Alice was the female of the group and athletic, but was not that scary either and Unger was the jokester of the group. Jernigen could have easily been the leader of the bunch if he wanted too, then things could have gotten even worse for Alex as he was not as emotional as Beaupre was.
