'Working on commission'?

What does the guy mean when he says "Would I make it up? Why, what's the point? Are we working on commission here?"

Maybe it's super-obvious, but I don't get what he means. I know what 'working on commission' means, I just don't understand it in the context of lying about seeing the closet door close. It's baffling me and kind of driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

When you work on commission you get paid by the job, like for example an artist that's paid to do a painting. Or in a store if the employees are paid on commission they get a percentage of what the people they are helping buys so they might "fight" over a seemingly wealthy customer because he or she might buy more than other customers (so by extension the employee get paid more).

Thanks for the help, but like I said, I know what 'working on commission' means, I just don't understand how it applies to the scene.

I can only guess he wanted credit for nabbing the kid. As you explained, commissioned employees will 'fight' over a customer. But I just think it's a confusing, badly written line. I appealed to a message board for help, for God's sake.

I think he is saying there is no reason to lie because it is not like he is getting any credit or reward for lying about it. For instance, some employees may try to lie about something they have done to get credit or praise for it. Basically, there is nothing in it for him by lying.
