What does that title mean?

It's a term from craps. Rolls can be either "easy" or "hard", depending on whether it's made in doubles or another combination. Of course, in terms of the film, it's meant to be symbolically applied to the situation within it. Sometimes when you win, it comes in a tough, "hard" fought victory, as opposed to an easy win.

Paul Thomas Anderson doesn't like the title. He said it sounds too much like "heartache."

I didn't know that. I did know that he wanted it to be called "Sydney".

He claimed he had the movie taken away from him and everything in post production went against what he wanted, including the title.
