$6000

Is there a significance to Sydney having $6000 when Jimmy is asking for money? I know that's the same amount that John needed for his mother's funeral, but is there a significance like that is for his own funeral costs?

very good observation. I think you could be right.

Seeing as how PT Anderson likes exploring the significance of coincidences, I'm certain that the ammounts were purposfully the same in order to foreshadow Jimmy's own death/funeral, as you had believed.

And it goes a little further: it's said by Sydney that the funeral of John's mother was 'ruled' (or some word like that), and we must understand WITHOUT the 6.000 bucks that John initially needs... likewise, Jimmy's death is 'ruled' and Sydney rips the remainders of the 6.000 from him - also here a different 'ruling'. I fully agree with th1a90 that PT A "likes exploring the significancy of coincidences" - anyone who's seen the 8's and 2's in Magnolia must know what I mean

I noticed the $6000 connection on a repeated viewing. My take seemed to be how Sydney's relationship with John had become so close. In the beginning, Sydney tells John he cannot give him $6000. Later, when John is getting ready to leave town, Sydney tells him he can give "all that he has" to help him. During the Sam Jackson sequence, it is reaveled that "all he has" is $6000, the exact amount he would not give him when they first met, but was now willing to give for him to be safe.

I think its a nice touch.

Another thing I noticed. Why does Sydney lose the hard eight bet, which he previously told Sam Jackson was a 'stupid bet', yet Sam Jackson wins the hard eight bet with Sydney's money. Hmmm...
