Philip Baker Hall same character in Midnight Run?

I recently noticed in that film he plays a character named Sydney who works for the Vegas mob, consulting with Dennis Farina's mafioso character. (as a laywer? not sure...) Coincidence? Or did P.T. Anderson take inspiration? Interesting all the same. :)

I noticed this too and the timing was very strange for me. I had just watched Sydney about a week before and caught Midnight Run on HBO. When Farina's character called Philip Baker Hall "Sydney" I did a double take. Maybe that's where PTA got the idea. Very interesting indeed.
