Still curious about some other 'locations'
I've been to Amarillo many times. That could have been Amarillo, or at least the area just outside of town where U.S. 60 and the Santa Fe railroad come to town from the northeast.
I'm pretty sure that "Martinsburg" was supposed to be Walsenburg, Colo., but it was filmed in Georgetown (about 200 miles away, west of Denver).
The train scene near the end, where R. Lee Ermey's character (Buck) and the Colorado State P.D. looked like some of the country between Colorado Springs and Castle Rock. I also thought maybe some of the mountain railroad scenes might have been on that line between Pueblo and Salida (by the way, you can't get from LaVeta west to Salida by rail anymore - there's no line north out of Alamosa to Salida but there was years ago).
But, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for railroaders in southern Colorado to be aware of news events out of Amarillo. It's only about 230 miles from Amarillo to the Colorado border. The mountain areas around LaVeta are also the closest "Colorado" recreational areas to that part of Texas.
