Huge plotline hole (spoiler)

This was just about the worst movie I've ever seen. It was way too contrived. But for me there was a huge hole in the storyline:

WHERE WAS THE BOY'S MOTHER?????

Dennis Quaid refers to her (she's a lawyer), yet she is completely invisible in the search for her missing child. Quaid's character never even CALLS her!

That would never happen in real life.
