The Title Ruined it

"G.I. Jane" makes this sounds hokey and lighthearted, which the film is not.

Is this movie a masterpiece? no but it is highly underrated at 5.5 or whatever IMDB has it at.

I think a lot of people were put off by the title and the hullaboo around Demi shaving her head.

I think you have a valid point. The working title was "Navy Cross". I don't know that it would have been the best choice, but at least better than what they went with.
