Theory that could use some fleshing out (Spoilers)

So, I watched Funny Games again last night and I noticed a few things that I haven't seen discussed on here really. If I'm wrong and there's a thread already, I apologize and would appreciate being directed there.

I don't have the film handy currently so I might fudge some of the details.

Anyway, Paul and Peter obviously treat the whole situation as their own personal game, but they also mention "others" who seem to be some mysterious party outside the confines of the film. When Peter shoots the boy, they leave suddenly because they broke the time rule as if they would incur some type of penalty. Then, at the end, they have that discussion about existing in different universes.

There is the dichotomy of reality from fiction in this movie, but I wonder if, with all this different universes talk, if perhaps we're not the only audience participating in the torture of this family--if there is maybe some larger game at hand and these two are on a team.

This "theory" is partially drawn from the Upstarts in Marvel Comics. They are a group of mutants who compete to kill other powerful mutants. A mutant called the Gamesmaster oversees this competition and awards points. The more high-profile the kill, the more points.

Not saying Funny Games was influenced by this rather small segment of X-Men comics, but perhaps there is something similar happening.

Any thoughts on this?

I think that's a really interesting theory, it certainly gives a new perspective on the film. Actually, that'd make me watch it again (specifically with your post in mind) which I didn't think I'd ever want to do after I finished it the first time.

It also made me think of a Cabin In The Woods style background (SPOILERS) where the two boys are carrying out the attack for some kind of all-powerful demon.

(And in CITW the demon at the end is meant to signify the audience and our desire for violence, so both kind of end up at the same place).
