Cathy Stewart's character
Could they have made her character anymore racist? lol
Typical all american blonde.

Typical all american blonde.
How was her character "racist?" She never ONCE expressed any racist attitudes. Are you just picking on her because she is blonde?
shareif the OP said WASP then it would have made sense. but racist??? nah!!!
shareThe scene where Cathy first meets Isabel at the restaurant. Cathy had this appalled look when Isabel told her she was Alex's wife. I got the impression Cathy was shocked that Alex would be with someone of spanish descent.
shareMaybe she is shocked Alex would turn around and get married so quickly after they had been dating.
shareFirst off, I have to make note how the OP calls the character Cathy racist then goes on to say, "Typical American blond." a bit of hypocracy makes a statement like that worthless.
I didn't once get the impression that she was racist. Just highly disappointed because she has been in love with Alex for a very long time. At the end by the helicopter Alex whispers in her ear and she pats him on the shoulder sending him, gracefully, on his way to get the woman he loves back. Definitely not the act of someone who was racist.
Within complexity lies simpleness.
Yea if Cathy was racist, I doubt she would have turned around and introduced herself to Isabel and shook her hand. She was just shocked that Alex had the time to meet someone and get married when he was "always so busy" every time she tried to visit him. Throw in the fact that Isabel was pregnant and well...
shareI have never before met someone who could read the mind of someone in a movie! You got the IMPRESSION that Cathy was shocked that Alex would be with someone of SPANISH descent?
How about that Cathy might be shocked because Cathy herself hoped to marry him?
How about that Cathy might simply be shocked because their families are friends and she had no idea that Alex was even seeing someone else?
And by the way, Isabel is likely of Mexican descent. There are people from Mexico who are NOT descended from Spanish ancestry. My great-great-grandfather was from Mexico. He was Indian--Indio. No part of him was Spanish.
Sheesh!
The problem with Cathy has nothing to do with race, it has to do with the fact, she was essentially a spoiled child, who never grew up (After pursuing Alex since the third grade, and always being rejected, she should have gotten the message, the answer is no). Although she grew up in the same environment as Alex, they were totally different: She essentially lived off of others (Like her parents), while Alex worked hard to get ahead, including going to Yale. In addition, being an architect is not easy, it requires hard work, taking very difficult classes in college (Particularly Ivy League, or MIT type Schools) and creativity. Isabel put that kind of effort into her photography, and that is something Alex admired about her (Along with the family structure (Much better than his own)). Those qualities, are why she essentially turned his world upside down, and he married her.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the movie never SAID what she did, or didn't do for a living. HOW do YOU know that she "lived off of others"? There is absolutely nothing in the movie that would suggest that. I think you are inventing your own fantasy background story there.
If you had been interested in someone (maybe even in love with that person) for years, wouldn't YOU be shocked (even disappointed) if you found out that said person was married - ESPECIALLY if that person was married to someone he or she barely knew?
And where do you get off, making that "all-American blonde" comment after you accused Cathy of being racist?!
No, she was shocked that Alex was married at all. She probably thought she would have heard about it, or even knew if he was dating someone, but all of a sudden he was married. I never got any impression of a racist attitude from her.
shareAlso, I'm not sure what you mean by "Spanish descent". Spanish is a language and "Spanish" is also the nationality of a person from Spain. Isabel is Mexican, not from Spain. She would be Mexican, or "of Hispanic descent'.
shareYou clearly had problems interpretting and understanding that dialogue. If you watch her face, its obvious she is trying to cover up MAJOR *disappointment*, as Isabel read her accurately when recounting to Alex, "I think she's jealous." You obviously missed that part, too. Hello! Didn't it click with you? She chases Alex everywhere, tries to find him at construction sites, cannot wait to call him and ask him on a date when she finds out about Isabel divorcing him, and says on the phone (all too cheerfully) "sorry to hear about you and your wife" then asks him out to go on that helicopter trip. That expression (coming from someone who has had to put it on themselves, whilst my heart was breaking inside and wants to flee to the bathroom and cry) was a look of heartbreak and disappointment.
If you've ever found out that the man you love and/or have loved your entire life got married or is seeing someone and is serious about your competitor, you would feel the same sense of grief, shock and disappointment. It was written ALL OVER HER FACE. She was devastated. But tried to act happy. Been there, done that; smiled myself when I wanted to collapse and cry and cry. Easy to recognise 'the look'. Had to do with a woman in love with a guy for years, finding out the man she loved got married. Had NOTHING at all, WHATSOEVER, to do with racism. Cathy could have been Mexican, and she would have had the exact same 'look' on finding out she lost the love of her life, and trying to say congratulations at the same time. It seems to me you have a lot of problems interpretting basic materials and/or comprehension. This was so easy, how could anyone not see it? Perhaps you've never been in love or in a relationship. ALL women would recognise THAT 'look'. Its unmistakeable.
KARMA always has the final say as to who is right and who isn't.
nicely put Gypsy!
Sorry you were on the receiving end of emotions like that!
She wasn't racist, just annoyingly clingy and desperate to get married. Anytime she was around Alex she was pawing at him, smiling all crazy and posing. I still can't get over that pose she strikes while waiting for him at the helicopter -- hip jutted out, head tilted, smiling like a lunatic. Who stands like that? She's such an annoying character!
"Don't dream it, be it."
girl was just trying to get her man. she was happy @ the helicopter because it finally seemed as if it was going to happen between her and alex.

How was her character racist?
She was someone who the main character wasn't interested in, that's all.
