Question re: the midtown club

This has bugged me for a bit, so I decided to seek the answer from my fellow IMDB'ers.

At the beginning of the movie, Jeff pushes Alex in an empty conference room, and mentions that he just closed a deal to purchase the midtown club. However, he wanted it kept on the Q.T. for fear of getting fired. His quote was something like, "I can lose my job". Then, in the middle of the movie, their boss was talking very openly about it, and even used it to get Alex back on track.

Why was Jeff so afraid of getting fired, when his boss already knew about the club?

My apologies if this has been previously discussed on a different thread.

The boss already new about the job. Jeff and Alex were not supposed to know that is why he said he could get fired.
