All these guys are super paranoid. They think everyone is after them (in this case they were right). Lefty was checking Donnies car to see if it was wired. Obviously it wasnt because no undercover officer would have a wired car for that exact reason.

According to the book, this really happened though it wasnt Lefty, it was a few guys from Jilly Grecas crew.
