God I wish he would just shut up. That monolog went on for what felt like an hour!
Oh, I thought it was great. If you're going to do an 'I am really the devil' film and not look silly, you're convincing is going to need some substance. That scene was certainly it for me.

shareThe Omen (1976) set my high standard for 'devil' films whereas Rosemary's Baby (1968) set a far lower one for me. The latter ended with a pile of devil worshippers trying to sound all devilish and spoookehh which, to me, sounded as weak and fake as they come. I know it was the first of it's kind and all that but...! I do hang quite a lot on the quality of the convincers in devil films. And I thought Pacino's here was great: an actual crack at a reasoned argument with some depth and variation.
I'm not saying that scene won't bore someone else to death, that's a matter of one's own taste which I welcome :-) For me, just sticking your fingers in hissey water or making the pictures on the walls move isn't enough to round off the subject.
Maybe that's why God gave man fast-forward...

^^You are correct. It was a superbly written monologue and I can't think of one actor who would have delivered it better than Al Pacino- De Niro included. Pacino can conjure that fire from within so well.

Actually DeNiro does play Satan in another movie- Angel Heart. Totally different kind of performance. What Pacino accomplishes with his monologus, DeNiro accomplishes by peeling and eating a hard boiled egg.
To be honest, I thought both were very menacing but for different reasons. Both had different takes on the same role and played it very well for their respective movies.

While it was a little excessive I agree, it was meant to be excessive.
This particular portrayal of the Devil was to show him as a 'blowhard', prone to long arrogant diatribes.

This scene alone is why i love this movie so much and Pacino has not often been THAT compelling. Every time i watch it i get goose bumps...
Transcendental and metaphysical. An all time classic moment.
