Why Does Murdoch Suddenly Fall Asleep?

Mr. Hand knocks him out as easily as the rest of the city's inhabitants right after Murdoch and Bumstead break through the wall near the films end. Does anyone know how or why this is possible? Earlier, we see Murdoch is invulnerable to the Sleep manoeuvre.

Ive never understood this scene. Thoughts or clarifications?

I never thought about that - you just gave me a new excuse to go watch it again. Thanks man!!!

I think that in part of surrendering, he 'lets go' of his 'blocking' the strangers constant attemp to make him sleep .
Its like cops tear gas a room , and a criminal with a gas mask surrenders and takes off the mask.

I always assumed that he was faking it (same when wakes up, again, as the Stranger transports him underground).

This is absolutely it in the first instance. He initially resists Mr. Hand's effort at putting him to sleep at the wall, but then surrenders because he realizes that it's the only way to save Anna. The second time he lets himself be put under after reflexively shaking off the sleep command to allow himself to be taken further into the "underworld."

reply

He allows himself to sleep both times. Before he was fighting it.
