The many dead squirrels were a serious warning.


The presence of lethal gas was sufficient for alarm. You don't need a major violent eruption to kill thousands, just poisonous gases (the heavier than air type) flowing down the mountainside, perhaps at night when most everyone is sleeping. They'd never know what hit them.

Also this is another similarity with "Volcano: Fire On The Mountain" where the vulcanologist finds several dead birds/rodents around a fumarole).
