Whenever Brosnan called the kids 'children'

"Come here, children."

"Get into the car, children."

I would LAUGH MY ASS OFF!

Every time he said it, it sounded like he'd never actually dealt with kids before. He sounded like the Professor he played in Mars Attacks (complete with pipe and suit). I looked it up and it was the previous year from this movie which makes me think he did these characters back to back.

I always thought there was something a little patronizing about the way he said that word. And now you've pointed out what it is I now cannot watch it without giggling whenever he says "children".

And you're also right about being like his Mars Attacks! character!

reply

In Brosnans defence this may be a character trait. Harry Dalton had never been around kids (think Sam Neills character Dr Allen Grant in Jurassic Park). Brosnan the actor is a family man and so would know how to talk to them. Probably.

"What's the matter Colonel Sanders - CHICKEN?"

reply

The Pierce Brosnan character plainly stated earlier in the film that he had never been married and had no children.

It was a choice to play the character as someone who would call the kids "children" and might take a bit of time getting comfortable dealing with them. The character's life, until then, revolved around interactions with adult scientists.

Actually, it sounds to me like you don't know how to talk to children, or know very much about them.

Don't think the problem is with Dalton.

reply

It doesn't sound strange to me and I never noticed it during the movie. As people have said, it makes sense for him to refer to them as "children", which is a more formal term, because his character has never had any experience with children before.

Also, Pierce is Irish and his character is British, and I think "children" is a more common word than "kids" in Britain. The word "kids" is seen as more slangy and American.

reply

Im Northern Irish/British & I call my children kids, not children. Maybe Pierce is old-fashioned with communication? Or its simply on the script & he was paid to say the lines

hello, mr. chips!

Life's like a Cabo Carne Asada: never know how spicy it's gunna get.

reply

There was a time at school where you would be chastised for calling a child a "kid".

Children are the offspring of humans, a "kid" is a young goat.

Maria in The Sound of Music called them "the children" too. "Kids" is American slang for children. Pierce did not fake an American accent for this so his character Harry is Irish too, and would not use the word "kids".

No

I watched this for the first time in years yesterday and decided to have subtitles. Towards the end of the movie he calls the girl sweetheart and sugar etc. The Gran calls Graham "Ace" at one point lol
