'97 and still Great Directing and Amazing FX

I watch Dante's Peak every 2 or 3 years when I see that it's on, and it still holds up for me. It's still one of my favorites of the disaster films genre, partly because I grew up on the West Coast and I remember the stunning horror of Mount St Helens. Dante's Peak IMO is heart pounding direction and FX that are still state of the art. Bravo again Richard Donaldson et all, all these years later.

I agree, love this movie and wont make apologies for doing so.

The FX by Digital Domain is indeed Oscar worthy, but luckily they did win that same year for TITANIC.

reply

Good catch Raver on the Digital Domain. That explains the outstanding FX here and why James Cameron chose them for Titanic.

reply

Cameron was part owner of Digital Domain along with Scott Ross formerly of ILM, which is why they handled most of the FX for Titanic. Apparently the two had a falling out and Cameron sold his interest in the company afterward.

Soooo many shots in this movie would be glossy CG if it was made recently. It looks fantastic. The only spot I always notice is when the lava comes through Ruth's wall. That doesn't look so great these days. Wasn't there a box office war between this and that awful Volcano movie set in LA w Tommy Lee Jones?

I think you are right, didn't these both come out in the summer of 97?

Best use of models I've seen , so much better than cgi. Only now watching in big screen hd that I realise it was large models for most of the destruction,

Same here its so refreshingly impressive considering the overdose of cgi nowadays.

Comparing this to that new San Andreas thing with the parity in the budgets i still prefer this for the use of models, i sometimes make dioramas so can appreciate the work that went into it.

Awesome movie, loved it when I was a kid. Just watched it and I'm amazed at how well it still looks. It was made right in the time when CGI and practical were more balanced, and the results are spectacular.
