So if Paul didn't think anything was wrong then why send Harry at all???

Paul was the one desperately trying to get Harry on the phone, then when he arrives to work he's the first one to tell Harry "we've got some activity at Dante's Peak".

So Harry goes to the town, finds all this evidence of a potential problem and finds the two dead bodies and when he is ready to get the town evacuated Paul is the first one to show up telling him everything is fine.

So when your computer thousands of miles away is showing you the peak is rumbling you feel important enough to send your best man for the job, but when he comes across burned trees, dead animals, toxic water and the two bodies in water that would melt a hot tub, suddenly you are not concerned?!?

Sounds like you've identified a good plot hole to me. I really enjoyed this film, especially for the great practical effects and showing all the different ways a volcano can be dangerous.

Anyone have a response to the OP's criticism?

Paul stated that there were many things that could cause the hot spring eruption and it didn't mean the mountain was going to blow up. As for sending Harry in the first place they were treating it like a bomb threat, the amount of earthquakes they were picking up happen all the time and almost every time it's a false alarm however they are still required to investigate.

Paul as the boss would have sent Harry to investigate, which he did. Once Harry called the meeting Paul got miffed that he usurped his authority and instinctively counteracted Harrys sugesstion for putting the town on alert.
Paul later said...if there's anymore town meetings to be called I'll call them.
If there had been no town meeting Paul would have likely agreed with harry.

I do believe that Paul legitimately thought that he was doing the right thing in not putting the town on alert, it just happened to turn out that he was wrong.
