No way could they outrun the pyroplastic flow in that truck...

That is probably the one thing that bugs me about this movie the most just because it is so over-the-top ridiculous. Pyroplastic flows move fast...up to 200 mph. Even if it was possible for the truck to go that fast, which it's not, it was slowed way down by all the debris they were driving through. They probably weren't even going 50 mph. It's an okay flick to watch other than that. I just hope nobody takes it too seriously...and we all know there are people out there that take movies like this one seriously, lol.

First, it's pyroclastic flow, with a 'C'. Second, it can be called good guy license. There's also no way James Bond or Xander Cage can outrun an avalanche.

For this to work the pyroclastic flow would have had to have been further away from town when they started driving toward the mine shaft. Also they didn't have to "outrun" the flow very far, just a block or two. Granted, the way it is depicted as dropping stones on the town while they are still driving (on four flat tires no less!) would have insured that they got eaten in real life.

If Hopalong Cassidy can fire thirty or forty shots from his six guns, then they can darn well outrun that pyroclastic flow in the old truck.

He can outrun a pyroplastic flow with that truck- it's equipped with a snorkel.

Pierce Brosnan can outrun the flow. However, if Timothy Dalton had been in the role, he'd have beat the sh*t out of that mountain and pummeled it into submission before it even erupted, then spent the rest of the film romancing Mayor Rachel and telling Paul how stupid he was.

As the next person in the thread says: it's called pyroclastic flow or nuée ardente in some cases. Additionally, it can travel at speeds up to 450mph. BUT, it also follows the path of least resistance, so if they were going down a side street not directly in the path of the flow they could have outrun it. Nor would it necessarily have followed them into the mine.

Right. And Helen Hunt and her boyfriend/ex-husband/whatever could have outrun that tornado, checked out a barn, made it to a pumphouse, tied themselves to the pipes with a belt, been sucked in the funnel, and walked away without a bruise or a scratch.

But it's a Hollywood sfx BS thing, so within the context of this movie, I can accept it and still enjoy it.

Yeah that is pretty much nonsense, not to mention lets say they actually did make it into the mine, the burning hot gas would still be right behind them, it would have seeped into the mine and they would have suffocated.

Pyroplastic. Is that superheated plastic that gets ejected from a volcano? I wonder if it's recyclable. It seemed more like a pyroclastic flow to me.
