Yeah, the ending is very sweet.
So long, scarecrow. So long, bad mood. So long, prescription pills. So long, bad blues. - Scarling
It has got the most uplifting ending I've ever seen for a bleak film. It is a fantastic character study and Gallo wrote and played Billy as a simple man but with many layers. We then see those layers stripped away as the film develops.
What's good about the ending is the fact he smiles for the first time in the whole movie.
I really do think this film is unique in that I've never seen a character shown that way,
When I first watched it I thought it was going to be a dark drama (I didn't know anything about the film and had no video cover) and when you see the way Gallo is- coming out of prison and kidnapping Ricci- I thought there was going to be something horiffic happen like a rape or murder and he was a a very dark character. But then the tone shifts with the first truly funny line "I swear to God if you make a fool outta me I'll kill you..Boom!..right in front of mummy and daddy... I'll tell you something else- if you make me look bad I will never EVER talk to you again...EVER" And that was the point when I knew I was in for a trip with this film. Leading up to that point which was about 20 mins in (in the car when Billy needs to take a p* i * ss) there were a few moments where I was thinking is this film supposed to be funny? I don't mean that it wasn't I mean I didn't know if it really was . The scene that precedes that one is the conversation with his mum on the phone which I did laugh when he had to repeat "BILLY.... YOU'RE SON!" but I still didn't know whether Billy was gonna be a psycho or not and if the film was artsy thriller. I still would've liked it but I was asking myself "am I supposed to like this guy?
And then that line about "never talk to you again" BOOM! I knew it was going to be interesting and funny.
It's such a darkly witted film and a real good character study. It's also probably the greatest love story I've ever seen.
I think everyone who loves the film knows what I mean. You just don't see a film shift tone and then keep peeling away layers (because until the end you still- even though you sympathise slightly with why Billy is the way he is) you still don't quite think he deserves our love and wanting the best for him.
Then he smiles and it's like the child-like man has become a real grown up ..and all he needed was love.

Sweetness was the first song Jon Anderson and Chris Squire wrote together
shareCool bit of trivia; I didn't know that. But I'm guessing Jon & Chris won't be playing "Sweetness" together again, unfortunately. If ever a band was in need of some sweetness, it's Yes. I've lost track of who's been kicked out.
shareWe'll see, Jon has gone and come back before, it could happen again!
shareI agree, the best part for me is that I wouldn't have guessed that it would end that way, but it fit perfectly. It made me love the whole thing that much more.

Yeah, it's definitely a good love film. I haven't been in love with someone for a while, but this film awoke the emotion within me again. It made me realise just how great love really is.
Now I want to find myself a Layla and live happily ever after.
The End.

I didn't realize how drawn into this film I was until the ending. The suspense of watching Billy potentially throw away his life, and then to see it end so well. Such a good film.
Can't keep me off this escalator!
Make it good, make it good, make it good!
sharegiven the tone of the film I have expected him to get hit by a car while walking back to the motel.

Having Layla changed Billy. It's good to have a girl friend. Wonderful movie. I thought it was going to be depressing but it surprised me with humor and the upbeat ending. Yes, one of the sweetest endings ever.
share"given the tone of the film I have expected him to get hit by a car while walking back to the motel."
Oh god, I know! I kept being afraid he'd be hit by a car, or she'd be gone from the motel when he got back!

Yes. Very affirming. He chooses life and the love of an unknown woman over revenge and death and a rather uninspiring funeral scene - I mean how many people, self included, imagine a momentous funeral and all Billy gets are his parents concerned with something other than him and his demise! Brilliant!

Judging by the rest of the movie I was prepared for a downer ending. I wanted it to end well for Billy, but I didn't expect it to at all. Personally, I don't mind downbeat endings and this movie seemed ripe for one, but it turned out to be a lovely surprise. :)
First, the scene where Billy calls Goon/Rocky and tells him that he's got a girlfriend now and not to touch his locker. Then that simple scene in the coffee shop. Just unexpected and fantastic.
Absolutelly right, i just watched it and i must say i felt happyness for real, for him, after all he has gone through and then you see him for the first time happy, completelly healed, as NEWborn to life, so overwhelmingly joyous with anyone around after so much dark and suffering, able at last to live and love.
It is the kind of movie if i were told about before, i would probably have said i am not keen/interested to those cheesy, sugar/sweet filled, girl/oriented kind of, beyond bland movies, and that would have been awfull WRONG, the truth is it got to me so much, I enjoyed it with a full heart. It is a beautiful thing to see all along, and yes, specially that glorious, tender, touching, heartfull and heartfilling ending it, God bless mr Gallo, has.
A very looong time since a movie gave me this warm feeling :-D .
PD: i feared he was going to be run over by a truck or something at the end too, though it would not have fitted at all at that point, only because it looked to good to be true, and for that annoying urge some directors have to put a bad ending so it may look more artsy to them ( chinese epics and so, aaaall dead).
PD2: Christina Ricci was awesome too, and so sexy and beautifull and lovely and cute, a true Godess. Pity she has gotten into the "thinmaniac" thing, actress tend to suffer lately :-/ .
Agree about Ricci getting too thin, but as I pointed out in another thread, Gallo surely didn't help by telling reporters later how fat she was in the movie.

That is unconsiderate, utterly wrong and shamefull, a true dissapointment specially coming from him. Thumbs absolutelly down for mr Gallo.
shareWhat a great ending.
