John Turturro is a wonderful actor

Sure, he only has a minor role in this movie, but he nails it. For movies with a larger John Turturro presence, go for Do the Right Thing, Miller's Crossing, or Barton Fink.

Yeah Barton Fink really shows off his talents. I also loved him in Quiz Show.

reply

He's always awesome in the smaller parts that I've seen him do in Sandler movies.

reply

He needs more roles indeed.

BARTON FINK! YES! That's one of my favourite Coen Bros. movies, and it's grotesquely underrated. Turturro's performance in particular is great, and I'm especially thinking of the scene in the woods. It's haunting. It twists my stomach when I watch it (even knowing what it means in the larger context of the film).

Turturro is a gift of an actor. He even made parts of the Transformers movie watchable! He was the best part of it. He's one of those actors who always just seems to bring *more* to the role.

In an interview, he spoke about The Big Lebowski (of course) and said that the Coens gave him a full day to shoot a bunch of Jesus bowling stuff because they specifically knew if they gave Turturro room to play, he'd use it well. He wanted to include the coke nail, the ball lick (I think), and the ball polishers (which he had observed while scouting a bowling alley). That's the kind of creativity, playfulness, and commitment to the craft that makes him so wonderful.

Final praise for Turturro: in another interview I saw, the interviewer informs him that there's a Dude action figure, and doesn't [John] think there should be a Jesus action figure? Turturro completely ignores the question and just gets excited about that there's a Dude action figure. He says he wants one. No ego. Beautiful.

Scene in the woods? I remember a great scene in the woods in Miller's Crossing.

reply

Heh, yeah... I goofed. I was thinking Miller's Crossing and typed Barton Fink.

Although, for the record, Barton Fink is also great.

reply

He's done so many supporting roles that are memorable, but also some lead roles in very small movies as well.

I have to say though his reprisal of The Jesus in that offshoot film not written/directed by the Coen Bros was pretty bad

reply

That was a pretty strange movie, I don't recall well enough to say much.

reply

Yeah I like his versatility.

O'Brother Where Art Thou

To Live and Die in LA.

Only a small role, but he is very memorable in it.

reply

YES...HE IS GREAT IN EVERYTHING...EVEN BIG BUDGET CRAP...I REALLY LIKE A SMALL FILM HE DID CALLED FEAR X IN 2003.

reply

That's a good point. There are a lot of great actors who become quite hampered by the big budget films, but he still turns it in. I'll have to check out that one too.
