Question about the scenes in Cambodia. Would like TO hear some opinions

First of all let me just say this is an amazing movie and I loved it. That being said, I am just a little confused as to why they chose to include the scenes with De Gaulle and give the history of Cambodia with those news clips. Why did Chow go to Angkor Wat in the first place? Just wondering if there was any significance that I missed.

So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.

I think it might have something to do with ideas about never being able to go back, memories blurring, and such. And, Mr. Wong was a newspaper man, so it makes sense for him to cover a story like De Gaulle's visit, and the civil war in Cambodia in early 1970 represents a sharp break in continuity.

Also, I think the seed of his whispered secret taking root in this "magical" place is a confirmation of "not going home tonight" leading to a seed which becomes his son.

Maybe others have some thoughts on these images?
