No change on my second viewing, unfortunately--

I still thought the production design and cinematography were worth a 10/10, but the film overall, even averaging that into the score, was worth a 5/10. Pretty much everything else about the film to me is a mess--the script, performances, editing, etc., and to top it off, I do not find the story the least bit engaging/interesting. When I'm watching, I just do not care about the characters, and the film produced absolutely no insight for me into anything. I just want it to be over--the "pretty pictures" are the sole consolation.

I was surprised that I still felt the same way, because I had just watched Days of Being Wild for the first time before my second viewing of this, and I thought it was okay--gave it a 7/10, despite the production design and cinematography not being quite as good, imo (although still good). The story worked a bit better there. The writing was better. I was a bit interested in the characters. In the Mood for Love seems almost like they were so busy making dresses and getting the sets and camera angles and movement just right that they forgot to write a script and didn't bother to make up much of one on the fly, either.

So now I'm facing a rewatch of 2046 with some trepidation, as I'm not even sure I managed to make it all the way through it the first time. All I remember was that after the first 30-40 minutes, I was resorting to forcing myself to watch about 10 minutes per day.

Good, finally a voice of reason. I saw the movie a long time ago but I remember hating it, more or less. The fact that it's in the Top 250 is preposterous.

I have to disagree. Upon my second viewing I gained more perspective, making me question certain parts of In the Mood for Love which had been oblivious on first viewing.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".
