Good children's movie ?

I remember watching this movie when i was 10. I actually enjoyed it a lot. The only Batman i was familiar was 1966 series which i used to watch when i kid. Then i directly jumped to Forever and this movie. For me these 2 movies were so good as child with all the goofy characters freeze, Riddler, Batgirl. In fact i found Batman 1989 so mediocre and hated Batman returns at it was too dark n Boring.

Then years passed I once again watched this series when I was 17 and was asking the same question " did i liked this movie back then". I felt it was so horrible , shocked and started to admire Tim Burton's movie especially Batman returns the film I once hated.

So did the producers actually succeed in making a good children's movie? I remember Joel Schumacher saying " We are making a Toy commercial "

reply

I can see kids being entertained by it. I was 16 when I saw it and hated it but 10 year old me probably would have enjoyed it. I doubt I would have wanted to watch it more than once, though. That said, it would still not be a good movie. I don't ignore a movie's quality simply because it's a kid flick.

reply

Not sure what audience it was going fr, if it was suppose to be for kids there shouldn't be homoerotic undertones.

I don't think Schumacher should've been saying "we are making a comic book" or "it's a cartoon" cause it isn't so much reminding everyone they're making a kid's film as just attracting ridicule, it would be the same if you were making a Disney film, it's ok if it's coming from audience members but when it's coming from the director himself it isn't so much reassuring it's in good hands as inducing eye rolls.

Joel Schumacher's two Batman films seemed to be confused on whom they were marketed towards. Say what you will about Tim Burton's Batman films, but they had a clearer idea of what they wanted to be (Batman (1989) was sort of like the first Ghostbusters or the Indiana Jones movies in that they weren't out and out "kids movies" and they had enough of an edge and grit to them that they could easily appeal to adults).

reply

And The Animated Series was able to appeal to kids and adults without being a bad comedy and is dark without being a tale of Shakespearean proportions.

Schumacher did feel like he was a few generations behind with younger audiences or simply trying too hard to be light hearted like with his Batman films and Lost Boys, even though a lot of his films are watchable they're light years behind with everything else.

reply

I disagree when it comes to Lost Boys. Lost Boys was very good and is one of the classics of the 80's. It was very much with the times.

reply

That's what happens when you're also sexually confused like Joel was/is :D :D :D

reply

Joel does come across as someone who doesn't take himself seriously and somebody who is out of touch with audiences.

People scapegoat him simply because he comes off as flamboyant and effeminate, when someone is like that it's all that everyone sees not a stern professional.

reply

You think that's bad?

Look at how people make fun of Tim Burton:

Ahahahhaa

reply

Joel's worst he makes every word from his mouth a pathetic joke. He's difficult to look at with his half open eyes and raised eyebrows.

I think it actually does better with a younger audience. I had fun watching this as a kid, as well as "Batman Forever." The biggest critics, I noticed, were adults who saw this as adults, and took it way too seriously. It was the last of the "campy Batman" films of the 90s, and not really meant to be a super-serious, dark drama like the later Batman films were.
