In the Old Testament, if a man died without children his next of kin was expected to marry the widow and continue the family line. If the next of kin didn't want to go along, however, she was supposed to haul him up before the village elders, take off his shoe, and spit in his face.
I'm not making this up, folks--it's in the Bible!
