The remaining surivors Danny, Terri and Westridge (sans a probably grieving Denise and an injured Steven) mutinied when they had the chance (with Gary no longer in the way) and tied him up. When he got out Steven saved the day by putting the tranq dart in his neck and Danny knocked him off the boat, into the water.
This topic seems unnecessary as they did everything they could to stop him. Hell, Denise was going to kill Serone the next day while he was tied up. That would've taken care of that problem if she hadn't of stalled.

Not only that, he was a professional poacher who had hunted on that river for probably decades and knew it like the back of his hand. That's how he caught up to Danny and Terri later.
