When it is time to execute the first hostage after the first 30 minutes, Gary Oldman points to the presidents wife and daughter and tells them to approach. He then shoots Jack (the security advisor) because he steps in and asks to speak to the Vice President. Had he not stepped in, would the wife and daughter really have been killed ??? And as far as Jack goes, what on earth was he thinking, seemed like suicide.

Seemed like a nod to Ellis in Die Hard. And America and Germany are the two worst countries at negotiating so that played into it. Jack regretted stepping out right after he did it.
