Of all the things that bugs me about this otherwise great show is the Iris over the Stargate itself, it looks like it contradicts the laws of physics in the way the segments of it overlap each other in the middle, it looks like it passes through the metal itself. I never liked that aspect, it makes it look silly.
Although the one on the show is probably CGI, Iris Mechanisms are a real technology. Most cameras use a similar mechanism to expose the film.

I'm reminded of that iris in the crawlspace of the Nostromo in Alien, that also made a hell of a creaking noise as it closed BUT left a small hole in the middle.
