to the movie or its own thing? I know they used to do that with TV shows based on movies. Alien Nation, Training Day, Lethal Weapon, for example. Didn't Daniel stay behind in the movie?

It's a sequel, though they recton some things (mostly character traits) to fit the new actors and show.

I think that's why I never got into it. I could never buy MacGyver as a replacement for Kurt Russell.

Or Daniel coming back to Earth after saying he was staying. Classic "oops, nevermind" trope.

I always thought Daniel staying there, in the movie, was weak.

And he left to find his wife, who was the main reason he stayed. He already proved his theories correct, and the opportunity to explore different worlds and cultures would obviously be appealing.
