Imagine if you had Hank Hill for a father

My sympathies. Poor Bobby. Every dream and desire he had, Hank crushed.

Seems like a normal guy to me.

Me too. Much better than Homer Simpson or Al Bundy!

I think Hank thought Bobby was a little 'strange' but he still loved him no matter what.

reply

Right. Hank was a good dad, but not perfect, and who is?

Yeah, he still loved Bobby but Hank isn't a touchy feely guy. He told Kahn to back off and he bragged about Bobby in the "blue grass is greener" episode. Kahn called Bobby worthless (or something) and Hank defended Bobby.

When Bobby lied about going to shop class because Hank thought Bobby was interested he bought a car for him that they could fix up together. Hank was in of men and mice for Bobby (and that is so not Hank's element, lol).

A lot of times Hank is trying to shield Bobby from being mocked. I am not sure if Bobby understands laughing with you vs laughing at you. Bobby isn't very driven so it is not like he has these stellar grades that make up for his lack of athletic ability. Right or wrong, Hank wants Bobby to fit in and be popular. In small town Texas that means football. Hank played and hung with the popular guys (Bill wasn't tragic in high school. Dale was only the towel guy but hanging with Hank, Boohauer and Bill saved him from mockery). Hank is conservative and set in his ways there is no denying that, but everything he does is because he loves Bobby so much and wants him to succeed and be popular.

Hank is definitely set in his ways but he is by no means a bad father because of it and it does not diminish his love for Bobby or his desire to see him happy.

You saw the fashion show episode. In the end Bobby was happy that Hank showed up....remember that other little fat kid was booed and had things thrown at him. Why not just paste a kick me sign on your back.

Bobby doesn't realize the difference between laughing with you and laughing at you. He has never done anything so funny that I was laughing with him (Bobby). Usually I am embarrassed for him (Bobby). A rodeo clown is not exactly the basket you want to put all your eggs in.

Again I am in no way denying that Hank is rigid but he wants Bobby to be happy and ACCEPTED not shunned. Bobby is not setting himself up on the best track for high school acceptance. He will have to ride Joseph's coattails.

Hank doesn't say the boy ain't right because he hates Bobby or to put him down. He (hank) is frustrated and is trying to help his son but it is not working. If he coddled him and told him that he( Bobby) is a special snowflake who can do anything he wants and everyone will think he is great, that wouldn't be giving his son a realistic view of the world. Sugar coating things is not doing Bobby any favors. IF Hank had a son who wasn't like Bobby then I would be more apt to say he needs to mellow out. That said Bobby should be glad he has Hank as a Dad. Having a father who indulges the asinine things he (bobby) is in to, would be the worst thing for Bobby.

***Not sure if you meant to imply Hank is a bad dad. Sorry I'm tired

Playing football (especially in small town Texas) will make you liked and accepted. Bobby wants friends, wants to be happy, have a girl friend etc. Do you honestly see Khan jr wanting to date him in high school if his claim to fame is shoving broccoli in his nose? I doubt it. Being a star running back will have a more positive affect.

I get the point you are trying to make, I am not stupid however I don't think it is a bad thing that Hank is the way he is when it comes to raising a boy like Bobby. Maybe Hank should let him fall flat on his face (Mom, Dad can you send me money to get back? I am homeless on the streets of San Francisco. Who knew prop comedy wasn't a safe bet?)but he is trying to push him in to other things. I will admit Hank is not doing a perfect job by a long shot, he'd be better off trying to gently guide Bobby. The answer however will never be letting Bobby do one asinine thing after another and never criticizing him. He already has one parent coddling her special little man, someone needs to represent the opposite end of things.

Yeah, true but do you remember "goodbye normal jeans" when Hank LOVES Bobby's cooking, baking and doesn't even mind sewing because he is SO good? Peggy ends up getting jealous (typical Peggy overreaction and child like behavior) because Hank prefers Bobby's cooking etc? IF Bobby excels at something, Hank does support him. Bobby's food was amazing and therefore Hank is all for it. If anything Peggy ruined that because if Bobby would have gotten competitive about it, Hank would have helped him every step of the way!

Homer is a drunk idiot.

Whats Hanks excuse for the way he is?

I think it would be funny to have Hank as a dad.

I sorta DO have Hank Hill for a father.

There are some similarities to my own dad. Both were enablers for wives with personality disorders.

I can't help but think of all the time I'd be forced to spend in Sunday school and church.

That's one big difference between Hank and my father--my dad never goes to church. And if he did, it would've been a different religion than the Hills (Baptist). But in lots of other ways, they're alike. And my relationship with him has always been a lot like Bobby's with Hank (except I'm a much better student).
