When Andie first joined the show I really liked her character and I liked her and Pacey together. I never understood why the writers ruined Andi and Pacey, or why they let Andi become a waste of a character.
No idea but I honestly wasn't that sad to see her go. She could be very annoying and I don't think she and Pacey were that great of a couple, it almost seemed like he settled for her after realizing he would never have the beautiful popular girls he dreamed about.
It's sad what they did to her character. She was probably the most enjoyable female character on the show for me and her relationship with Pacey was the best.
Truth be told, I didn't miss her after she left...but it was disrespectful of them to cut her scenes out of the finale. They should have found a way to include them, being that she was graceful enough to return after being fired all the years earlier.
She was 29 and playing a 16 year old, so maybe she didn't want the role anymore--or the writers lost interest in Andie. She did open a discussion of mental illness with teens. After that and her breakup with Pacey there wasn't much of a story for her. You could just tell that her character wouldn't last long after she cheated on him.
Frankly, it's better for her to be written off the show than what they did to Jen. She has a *beep* story line for years on end.
I felt as though the reason she left was two parts.
One was on Meredith herself. I think she hated what they did to her character after the second season. That, and I know she said she hated the outfits they put her in. In fact, when she came back to do the Series Finale, she specifically asked to be able to pick out her own clothes to make sure they didn't rehash some terrible choices for her.
Second was the problem they ran into with her character. I feel like she started out strong. She was a good foil to Pacey, and I legitimately loved their relationship. They both challenged each other and brought out the best (as opposed to Pacey's OTHER relationship). So when they pretty much assassinated her character in the third season, they wrote themselves into a corner. People hated what Andie did to Pacey, and then with the cheating, and the lying, and all of that stuff, they just made her worse and worse (I honestly believe they did that to make room for Pacey and Joey because I think Pacey/Andie had a huge following at the time). With all of that done, they had pretty much destroyed her and she became irrelevant to the rest of the stories the characters were having.
I didn't like what they did to her character either - it was so un-Andie like and not believable at all. She DEFINITELY brought out the best in Pacey & their chemistry was 2nd to none, unlike the relationship with Joey which had 0 chemistry. She brought out the WORST in him throughout S4.
To make the Pacey/Joey romance believable Andie had to go. Also Meredith Monroe was starting to become as popular as Katie Holmes Being let go was not her idea and she was pretty pissed about it. They really had to kiss her ass to get to come back at the end of season four.
They did bring her back at the end of season four. The idea was to have Pacey tell her how much she meant to him and to give the fans of the show, the idea they may get back together. At the same time Joey and Dawson were making out in his bedroom in a scene exactly like the final scene in end of season one. They thought the show was going to end after season four, which is why they did the above.
Rory and Loerelai are in a French cafe. The decorations are perfect. The sun shines through the window.
LORELAI: When we get back home, do you think I should buy Harvard Law School? RORY: Outright? That would be expensive. LORELAI: We'll just put together a business plan. RORY: It could be a tax write off! (WAITER approches the table with a dish towel draped over his forearm) WAITER: Can I get you anything? RORY: The tea is delicious. Can I have a napkin? WAITER: But of course. (WAITER rushes off) LORELAI: I don't know if I like this waiter's approach. RORY: Me either. Maybe one of the first things we could change about Harvard is to make the staff more professional. LORELAI: Here, here. Let's toast. (WAITER returns) WAITER: Madam, here is your napkin. LORELAI: I'll have you know that while you were busy with your waiter activity, Rory here helped me initialize plans for a major business acquisition. WAITER: I am sorry, Madam. RORY: Just get us the check, please. (WAITER scurries off) LORELAI: I think you and I have a lot to talk about on the plane ride home.
From my understanding from reading various interviews over the years is that every strange decision that was made after Kevin Williamson left was to service Joey/Katie Holmes. Katie was very popular and writers said they kept getting notes from the WB saying "more Joey". One story in particular had Jen and Jack going to NY to research Jen's past. Writers were told that Joey had to be a part of the "A" story line, so Joey ended up going to NY with Jen instead. Which made no sense at all.
So my educated guess would be that Andie/Meredith were sacrificed to give Joey more screen time. Simple as that.
Meredith was fired from the show after the writers/producers claimed they had nothing else to do with her character. After all they did to her in season 3 they put themselves in a corner where they had no way to fix her character and didnt know what to do with her so they got rid of her.
She didnt leave, she was let go. And not happy about it.
She was also becoming one of the more popular characters of the show and no one expected that and I am sure the producers were not happy with her popularity rivaling their precious star Katie Holmes. Katie became the most popular after season 1 and they made sure she remained that way.
I think Andie was killed off 'cause she was a threat to Joey and Pacey and there were fans that wanted to see Pacey get back together with Andie instead of Joey so it killed any hope of that happening. They could have easily kept Andie on and had her as Joey's friend instead of replacing her with Audrey and found a new love interest for her character or even had her get together with Dawson for a while but they wrote her off and replaced her with Audrey (who was an awful replacement) just to push Joey up to the top position. When I watch repeats of Dawson's Creek it still makes me angry what they did to Andie's character and I didn't hate Joey but I hated how the writers did to all the other female characters in this show whose names weren't Joey and Andie was just as popular as Joey and Jen and had a large fanbase as another member mentioned but they didn't take that into account when they wrote her off nor did they take into account the Jen fans when they killed her off.
