Jack coming out

The scene in season 2 where Jack comes out to his dad is (in my opinion) just fantastic. The writing. The acting. Everything. Still brings me to tears.

I agree. Even more meaningful is that this episode wasn't written as a gimmick (for lack of better words) for mainstream attention & a pat on the head from the media. Nowadays a show would do this because it's the cool thing to do, but back then telling stories like this went against the grain.

I agree. This scene was a bit more overt, but it got the point across. Willow coming out on Buffy was also a great moment for the shows of my generation, but it was much more understated (and occurred about a year after this one).

They really did do angst perfectly. This scene is a great example and one of my all-time favorite scenes on the show is Pacey talking to his passed out father on the beach - a lot of feeling and emotion in just a few minutes of screen time and it still makes me tear up to watch it. Joey talking to her father through the prison fence was another good moment.

Depends. Nowadays, it would happen because people give more importance to equal representation. And nowadays, we're more likely to be introduced to a character who is fleshed-out as an actual character who just happens to be gay, instead of making "gay" their entire character, without having to go through the coming out drama. So, one could argue that the Creek doing this was more gimmicky. Not complaining, it was done well, just saying.

I feel like you're missing my point. It was a powerfully told story period, but it was even more powerful because of the time period that it was told in. Plus Kevin Williamson is gay himself, so he wasn't doing it for gimmicky reasons. This was clearly a personal story to him, so that was another reason as to why he made sure that it was well told & depicted realistically.

It's easier to do something when everyone else is doing it and it's also the in-thing to do. It's much harder to do something when very few people are doing it. Writing LGBT storylines back in the 90s was considered controversial in comparison to how it is today. Kevin should be applauded for having the courage to write one. All television show writers period who wrote LGBT storylines in television shows back in the 90s and prior (& also did it respectfully) should be applauded for having the guts to do that because doing that was going against the grain.
