Question about Wesley...

I watched Buffy from the start, when it initially started airing in the UK in 1998,on BBC 2, and this has never occurred to me before:

Why is Wesley able to freely come and go, in an American High School, with no one questioning his presence? They never have a scene explaining if he has a cover story, or why Snyder or any other Teacher doesn't question why he's there!

I'm not poking holes in the show, in fact it's probably my favourite TV show of all time, it's just suddenly struck me as strange that this issue was never mentioned!

It's just a story, man.

Probably the same way Giles got the position as librarian: the Watchers' Council eliminated the other offers for the job and got him the position. There was an old comic that alluded to that.

The Watchers' Council probably manipulated Wesley into some sort of assistant cover story.

reply

Faith was still a teenager, she could blend in. Wesley would probably need a cover, like being Giles new assistant.

reply

Or being his replacement and he's just being trained.

You are sin.

reply

Wow, they really missed a trick there. A scene with Synder cross examining Wesley could have been hilarious! 

I am surprised that neither Synder or any other non-Scooby student seemed to question all these random people like Kendra, Faith, Wesley etc. just hanging out in the library.

reply

Well, to be fair with Faith and Kendra, they were teenagers. Even in a small school, you don't know everybody to say, "Hey, you don't belong here."

You are sin.

reply

True, most high school teachers probably wouldn't think twice seeing a teenager they didn't know in the hallway. Most teachers don't teach every single student that attends the school.

I would've LOVED to see that scene between Wesley and Snyder! The mind boggles at how hilarious it could've been.

I agree. That would have been funny especially if Snyder had caught him with Cordelia. 😂

Well dressed man inside an upscale public high school with no weapons visibly on him actually would not raise suspicion unless he was actually assaulting people or stealing. Yeah now everybody has to sign in etc but remember this show was produced in the 1990's.

Plus the school (torance high in real life) was constructed in the 1920's-1930's. So architecturally it wasn't even built for the era of school security. If they made/remade the show today, Wesley would have to pose as a vendor for the library.

reply

That's the thing - no one used the library.

That's why it's funny in Passion when Xander questioned Johnathon and his friend what they're there for.

The library is a good hiding place.

reply

Yeah! It's funny how rarely we see non Scooby students even inside the library

reply

During the many, many times in the first three seasons that vampiric and/or demonic things are going on inside the library, it would have been funny if any non Scooby Gang students happened to walk in the door looking for a particular book...

reply

It's been a while. Wasn't that how Xander discovered Buffy's secret? He just happened to be in the library getting a book when they were talking about her mission

reply

somebody did walk in the very first season and Giles forgot it was a school library and asked who are you and what are you doing here?

Plus the size of it. Okay public school libraries are not for the general public. And this is a suburb, not a big city. But still, it is tiny. Most people who did need books etc for research probably went to off campus libraries.
