THE ONLY CHARACTER NEVER TARGETED BY THE FIRST

Each Scooby had their dealings with The First Evil, except Xander. Xander was only 1 never to have had the final Big Bad play mindgames with him. By not being in CONVERSATIONS WITH DEAD PEOPLE, Nicolas Brendon never got to be the sole original castmember not to appear in every episode. The writers missed an opportunity to include Xander by bringing back a blast from the past, Jesse. Eric Balfour could have been a great callback to Season 1 If The First had decided to mess around with the future cyclops.

Maybe others will agree. But I don't see it. I don't think that that would be good. Jesse was already so far back in the seasons. It wouldn't have really been anything. But that's just me.

But remember how when Faith came back to S-dale, which form The First took to play head games with her, The Mayor? The Mayor had not been seen in any capacity since Season 4's THIS YEAR'S GIRL. It stands to reason that Jesse as a manifestation for tormenting Xander would not be far off, especially after Caleb gouged out his eye. By not being haunted in some way by The First, Xander never really had a dog in the fight, it was never personal. For the rest of the Scooby Gang, it WAS personal.

Jesse was an afterthought...literally, he was never mentioned after the first season. It would've been wasted time/plot.

Say, do you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper.....

reply

Yeah, but the Mayor was a big villain on the show. Jesse was in 2 episodes in the very beginning and the audience didn't even know him well because he died right away.

reply

Xander may not have been able to be an easy target for the first. In 'Nightmares' he was the only one to actually fight his fears also.
Though I would have liked to see The First interact with him, like maybe as Buffy (bringing his love for her back into play).

Various trivia sights on the net claim that they actually tried to get Balfour to return as Jesse for this episode, but he was not available, and that's why Xanders role in the episode was cut all together. So they did try, to no avail.

reply

Well, it did have its' disciple gouge his eye out?

reply

I like the idea that The First as Buffy taunted him about he stills love her, even so according with some writers plans, that was an alternative idea for season seven, Xander and Buffy love intentions.

reply

I think it was too late to bring Jesse back at that point. Apart from him only appearing in two episodes I don't remember him ever being mentioned again after that and it was like he never existed. I would have liked to have seen them do something with Xander but with another character like Amy.
