Episodes that can be skipped

I've been trying to get my best friend into Buffy for years... like a decade now... but she just can't get through some of those early episodes even though I continuously promise her how good it's going to get. So I'm weeding out some of the episodes from the first few seasons that she can skip. My criteria were 1) it doesn't significantly progress the plot, 2) it doesn't provide particularly significant character development, and 3) it's not an episode referenced too much throughout the series. Here's what I decided to leave out:

Teacher's Pet
The Pack
I Robot... You Jane
The Puppet Show
Nightmares
Some Assembly Required
Inca Mummy Girl
Reptile Boy
Bad Eggs
Killed by Death
Go Fish
Beer Bad
Where the Wild Things Are

Don't get me wrong, I think she should watch every single episode but I want to see if I can finally get her to stick with it.

What do you think? Are there any episodes you think could be added to this list? Or did I put some episodes on the list that really shouldn't be left out?

reply

Go fish is worth it as you Xander in speedeos!.

reply

Mmmm Xander in speedos.

I feel that "Bad Eggs" needs to be watched. Bare with me on this one. I am not a fan of the ep either and find it very boring. The reason being is that Buffy and Angels relationship is purposely displayed as being very innocent in this ep and that's because the writers knew where it was going after lol. So I feel that watching this episode right before "Surprise" and "Innoxence" makes those two iconic eps that more more emotional.

Bad Eggs can't be skipped. No, seriously. It's a CRITICAL episode for Angel's character development.

Without watching this episode, you don't hear him say he can't have children, which is repeated prominently in the breakup speech in The Prom. And then Trevor Lockley's comments about him not knowing what it's like to be a father, his desire for a family in War Zone and finally having Connor all mean so much less. Those scenes between Buffy and Angel really can't be skipped.

In fact, it might be one of the most important episodes for Buffy and Angel of them all. There's more to this episode than a Monster of the Week take on Sex Ed. Their relationship woes are the opposite of the usual consequences of teenage sex (rather than pregnancy, it's the acknowledgment there won't be). Their problems are more adult and future-focused, and this is just one example. This is the episode where Angel asks Buffy to think about her future in a year or five years from now. Angel is the only boyfriend of Buffy's who ever makes her consider her future, even if she never likes to acknowledge she has one. The Mayor and Joyce's comments in season 3, along with Angel's own, pointedly mirror things Angel himself said long before they ever slept together, most prominently in Bad Eggs (in fact, he was saying things in 1x07 that appear in their eventual breakup speech).

Don't skip episodes. I mean it. Each one has something meaningful that will be referred to again or mean something to the characters' developments. I may despise Beer Bad so much that I've only ever watched it about 3 times ever, but even I can acknowledge it at least has Parker getting bopped on the head. Which is about its only redeeming value, alas. At least Where the Wild Things Are has Spike and Anya bonding and a Felicity hair joke that reminds me that I'm old enough to remember the media outrage around that. LOL.

None of the seasons 1-3 episodes should be skipped. At all. They all have key character arc material. Beer Bad is the only one that is legitimately difficult to sit through for even a lot of diehard fans, to the point where Joss apologized for making it.

I have skipped over Superstar and The Body in most my rewatches.

I have never managed to fully watch Helly Bells because its so drastically out of character for Xander.

Quit trying. She clearly doesn't like this show.

reply

As Karl_Wolfgang_47 said stop trying and accept that your friend will never be persuaded to love the show. If it meant ot happen oneday it will only be by her choice of giving it a try.

Some people have a different taste that will not go along with Buffy and no matter how good the show is it won't get their approval.

I also want to add to anyone who wants to introduce the show to their family & friends that its not a good idea to skip any episode since its necessary for them to build their emotional connection with the characters and the whole Buffyverse perfectly so that they will understand and feel and connect wholly with everything that is going to happen.

Beside I always found a thing or two at least that I like about every episode including the likes of 'Teacher's Pet' & ' I Robot... You Jane' so I loved watching all episodes no matter what.

No episode can be skipped. Even the less than perfect episodes have something of merit in them.

reply

Pretty much all of S7. jkjkjkjk 

reply

None, every ep has at least something to recommend it.

reply

My god, much as I love this show, the amount of episodes I just do not care for could fill an entire new season.

reply

I personally think Puppet Show was an excellent episode. When I saw it, I understood how Buffy was willing to take chances and twist the norms of conventional horror story telling.

There is one, and only one I've only seen once and never again, and that'd be "Superstar". Sometimes Jane Espenson drives me insane.
