This is a tough one, because neither break-up properly dealt with the actual, underlying causes of their break-ups - Willow abusing her power, Xander's fears of hurting Anya. While I like Tabula Rasa better as an episode, I'd have to go with Hells Bells as the better break-up; because I felt it was a natural break-up, and there was a certain amount of karmic symmetry to Anyanka being jilted at the altar, after ruining so many people's lives. Really tough one choose between though.

I think grudge was more justified as Spike killed his mother but not only did Angel not harm Gunn's sister but he may have prevented her death if Gunn trusted Angel

If it were Xander who turned gay who should he be with Spike or a newly created male character in season 4?

Can we finesse "newly created" to be "under-developed character who wasn't identified as gay"? Because if so, Xander and Graham. There was a thread that discussed that prospect once, and there was some interesting potential there; like Riley and Graham both debating leaving Sunnydale, and where Riley leaves, choosing the military, Graham stays and chooses Xander.

In terms of alternate character directions:
Riley becomes "Adam" (instead of there being an Adam, Riley goes missing and it's found Maggie has turned him into her pet project)
