Those Apocalypse Feels: Anyone else feeling a sense of dread from...

...the message board shutdown? I know there are tons of threads out there (here and on other boards) discussing ways to stop the shutdown or even coming up with alternatives. But, does anyone else just feel odd posting since the announcement?

I know this in no way compares but I almost want to liken it to what the Scoobies/Angel Investigation felt before every might-be apocalypse. Like, there's this sense of "maybe there's a way to fix this" but still being totally uncertain that we can.

Is it just me or is anyone else feeling..."off" whenever coming to the IMDB message boards now?

And it's not even May, the traditional Scooby apocalyptic month.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

For me, I’m just feeling a sense of “Eh, to hell with it.” and posting whatever, whenever and wherever, when typically I’d be more reserved and holding back on posting. I’m finding it very freeing, personally.

Exactly! I've even gathered the courage to comment on the Alien board. Those nerds don't scare me anymore in these final days!

But it does feel like the end of an era, doesn't it?

IMDB was the first message board I ever signed up for. I was 15 at the time and saw a question for a Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. None of the posters were able to answer it so I decided to stop being a lurker and finally post.

At 15, I was pretty shy. On top of this, I was a nerd in the rural south so it wasn't like I had many outlets to put myself out there. I know it's silly but the IMDB message boards are honestly a huge reason why I'm so much more outspoken today. If I can post a 5-paragraph long theory about some blonde girl in a made-up city fighting made-up monsters, why can't I speak up more in class?? Or go out with friends? Or try to pursue a career outside of my small town??

Aaand I'm crying again.  That's the most wonderful defence of the value of these boards. 

IMDb boards to me felt like that one place that would always be around even when other social media platforms came and went away. I guess the lesson here is that absolutely nothing lasts forever, especially on the internet.

LoL!! It's oddly the opposite for me. I usually post paragraphs on any given board without hesitation. This board in particular is a place where I never hold back what I have to say.

But now, I'm more brief and only sticking to my usual stomping grounds. Weird how that is...

I absolutely know where you're coming from. I've felt a sort of hesitance to come to any of the regular forums I frequent here over the last few days, because there's sort of this sense of futility, if it's all going to be deleted soon; combined with a lot of the discussion about the closure itself sometimes seeming to overshadow the discussion of any of the main topics.
Plus there's a preponderance of alternative options, and all of them with their share of good and bad. You've got the IMDB v2 board. I just saw through another board here that there's http://thegotboard.com/, which is not only another board inspired by the closure to stick it to IMDB, but the second I saw it, I recognized it as another Proboards based board; though somehow they've been able to use a more unique URL. But now there are two competing and virtually identical boards designed as a migration/replacement setting. And in both cases, there's going to be a lot of competition to get special recognition for a particular sub-forum, like Buffy, but if you split the users between the two options, it's going to be harder to show that support. Plus I found that, while it acknowledges that you're logged in for another Proboard forum, you still have to register separately for each one.

Another user posted a link to this site, https://www.themoviedb.org, which apparently an alternate (dare I say, knock-off) IMDB; complete with show and movie info, plus forums for each entry. That might seem like a really good option, and an even bigger f-you to IMDB, but the main drawback I see so far with the forums is that the text formatting isn't any better than IMDB's. In fact it's closer to what it was a few years ago, before IMBD implemented the mark-up buttons; and the mark-ups at themoviedb are more like HTML mark-ups, so it'd require learning new mark-up tags for some people....

Basically, this seriously blows....

well, i feel like i'd better use whatever time i have left. take advantage of what's there while it's there.

i feel it's best to do it all to the maximum until it's all over.

I definitely feel more pressure to post comments I haven't made yet. I just hope I can manage in time.

I can understand that feeling for people who like to discuss old movies and such for which there isn't another outlet out there. But when it comes to Buffy? Not even a little. There are a ton of Buffy forums out there.

reply

yeah. thats just a testament.
the only unfortunate is the old movie bit, definitely. we'll have to go to places like fangoria and other genre-specific movie places to discuss those old films.

I wouldn't call it a sense of 'dread' but I was kinda upset and disappointed at the time 'cause I enjoyed writing on here but since then I have already joined and am planning to join other forums and the more I think about it I am not going to miss the trolls, the cyber bullies and the homophobes that send me abusive private messages (like one I got today) and I always sensed there was a lot of homophobia on this site.
