I think it has more to do with manpower. The admins likely spend a lot of time dealing with message board issues, since there are so many users that post and comment. Scrapping the boards altogether, I'm sure frees up time to work on the site's "nuts and bolts," the info content. Plus, they have people that actually pay for that IMDb Pro feature and they probably want to work on that end of it - expanding the Pro content, pushing people to sign up, etc.
Unfortunately, this is the way most internet sites are going. You only get so much for free but if you want all the "good stuff," you gotta pay for it. IMDb was a good escape, in that you could use the message boards and be on the site for hours but not every site has a Mark Zuckerberg behind it and can offer all the content for free, without ads. Sad to see the boards go but it probably was inevitable.
One should have thought though, that when they choose to shut down the boards, they would have deactivated the option to create an account.
Trolls are still happily creating new sock accounts, from where they can flood the boards from with their garbage topics, such as this nut job, who's life obviously takes place entirely in front of his computer, due to the massive continuous flooding he is doing: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur72441058/
Ahh, the Politics section is awful to say the least. I have looked at that section a few times and I wouldn't write on it if somebody paid me to but the problem is like on a lot of other forums the fights over Donald Trump has spilled out on to other boards and even here in Australia we have had forums that are full of it and moderators have warned members not to write about American politics or they will get deleted 'cause they are sick of the fights.
