I'm gonna throw a curve ball at this topic and say my favorite Big Bad was the ORIGINAL baddie who started it all. No, not Heinrich, the Master of the Order of Aurelius. The one BEFORE him who spans not just our Slayer but 20+. The one who convinced our Sunlit Slayer that her own unique style (or "keen fashion sense" as she put it, at the time) was more important than stuffy ol' traditions. The one who successfully killed her Watcher and made her realize the gravity of her destiny AND the importance of not letting it take over her life.
My favorite Big Bad...is Lothos.
I know many likely wouldn't consider him "Big Bad" status but hear me out. He was Buffy's first vampire master and (since we're being honest) one of her most impressive slays. He killed 20+ well-trained Slayers with ease. Some of those girls were even discovered as Potentials and trained to be the One Girl before becoming the One Girl. But, he killed them all. On top of this, he army was a mix of the old way and modern style. Thus, we can surmise he was a vampire master who believed in innovating. He kept what worked and improved upon what didn't.
In Season 1, there wasn't much faith in Buffy as a Slayer. Heck, in Season 3, there wasn't much faith in Buffy, as seen with Quentin Travers. BUT, there was still faith. And I think this came from slaying Lothos. He was Buffy's first "FU" to the Watcher's Council and their ways. How could their well-trained, perfectly polished tools not stop this vampire master but an UNDISCOVERED, recently called Potential who refuses to truly embrace their definition of what it means to be THEIR Slayer do so in weeks/months? How can a girl who refused to relinquish her normal life and continue to be a-...a CHEERLEADER be the key to stopping a scourge worse than the Whirlwind?!?
I'm sure many of them rationalized Buffy's defeat of Lothos as of "fluke"....but then she stops the Master of the Order of Aurelius. Then Angelus, leader of the Whirlwind. Heck, she beat ANOTHER vampire master Kakistos AND the rogue Slayer who feared him. A rogue Slayer who had not one, but FOUR Watchers, mind you (her original Watcher, Gwendolyn Post, Giles, and Wesley). Don't even get me started on how lackluster Kendra was despite being trained since she was 2. At this point, none among them could "rationalize" Buffy's skill away.
And it all started with her first Big Bad: Lothos.
