Which is very rare, and I thought both movies were really funny.

If I didn't know any better, I'd almost say that this sequel was the first, not second.

Yeah, I remember when these movies first came out, I thought this was pretty good, but didn't care much for the original. I still think the sequel is pretty good, and haven't watched the original in a long time.

Agreed.

The first felt like a pilot of sorts, and a lot of homages were paid.

The second one felt more like a proper movie, with some great turns.

It's a shame only one per year was made; the cast really nail the roles, and the juxtaposition (fish out of water) had an innovative turn (temporally speaking, of course)...
