and thats ok!

reply

What’s a “popcorn movie”?

reply

a relaxing fun movie

reply

Oh I see, well then just call it a relaxing fun movie.

reply

You never use metaphors, expressions, or figures of speech?

reply

I do if they make sense. “Popcorn movie” doesn’t make sense because I could just as easily eat popcorn while watching Schindlers List or Platoon, etc.

reply

But, "popcorn movie" is a very common expression. I have heard it since I was a kid.

reply

I've never heard it until now.

reply

I'd go further and say a popcorn movie is one that doesn't require much thought from the audience. Dumb, predictable but fun.

reply

Oh I see, well in that case I'll just call it a "dumb" movie, it's less syllables anyways.

reply

The first time I watched it, it was a lot of fun. But the second time the 'dumb' outweighed the fun. It became more of something to laugh at than to enjoy on its own merits. An uncooked popcorn movie?

reply

The thing is the first half is just bad, but the second half does turn into good mindless fun. I can point out the exact moment where this happens as well, it's right after Jo says "we're not going".

reply

*spoilers* Yeah. My main problem was they couldn't even mention an F5 around Jo because they are so bad and because of her dad. But they get caught up in the center of one and don't so much as lose a shoe. They come out without a scratch. And every tornado breaks up as soon as it reaches them.
And some wasted opportunities. Imagine an eerie siren howling in the dead of night, and you could only see the tornado approach with every flash of lightning. Heck they couldn't top the scariness of the Wizard of Oz tornado from the 1930s....

reply

Yeah I know that was kind of dumb, every time the tornado dissipates as soon as it passes over them, I guess they don't like the way Bill Paxton tastes.

reply

loL

reply

Popcorn, the food, is sometimes OK and never better than that. Whoopee.

reply

I didn't feel like watching it when it came out. The effects were groundbreaking for their time.
