It's too bad Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman won't be around.

It wouldn't have anything that the original had going for it at that time. Twister movies weren't really a thing then and CGI special effects back in 96 were still fairly fresh and impressive to look at. I remember going to see Twister when it came out. I saw it twice, and although I don't think of it very highly these days it was great seeing it as a kid back in the 90's on the big screen for the first time, AND being into tornadoes. The trouble is there have been hundreds of crappy low budget Syfy twister movies since, and you can see the real things with countless Youtube videos and channels about them. It no longer has the same aura and appeal as it did. Not to mention Paxman and Hoffman, who played the film's most memorable character, are no longer with us.

All valid points especially the shitty syfy films sullying the genre the only thing that gives me a like 'hmm' is the news Spielberg is going nuts over the script.. I mean why would he be vested in it going ahead if it wasn't something pretty interesting

reply

Well, they could always go to wherever twisters are formed and found and shoot some real footage. Or employ outsiders to go shoot footage and use the footage in the film.

I'm actually excited to see this. There's nothing quite like Mother Nature. I enjoyed the first film. The scene where they sent up "censors" into the tornado, is still something I remember quite fondly from the film.

I'm not as pessimistic. A good story can trump absent characters. Also, I think Hollywood has figured out some of these nostalgia trips after a few missteps and now some success. A lot of people were bashing Top Gun Maverick as being a ridiculous idea for a sequel, and surprise, Hollywood got it right. General public opinion on things they haven't seen doesn't always have the best track record. I for one will hold judgment until I get to watch it.

reply

This is true. The success or failure will ultimately fall on the writing. Top Gun: Maverick managed to do what I didn't think possible so I guess Twister can too, but it would take a seriously good effort. TGM probably did have a little more to work with than Twister does. At least it has the pull of leading action star Tom Cruise and was always slightly more story driven. The big selling point with Twister at the time was really the fact it was a special effects spectacle.

AS MAD ABOUT YOU FANS...MY FAMILY SAW TWISTER IN THEATERS. NOEMOJI

Saw this film in the cinema twice back when it was released. Was fascinated with tornadoes as a kid and knowing this big budget tornado movie was coming out I decided to make the most of it. Enjoyed it at the cinema but can see through all its silliness and cheesiness now. Still love PSH in it though.

reply

I don't fully agree. Yes, there have been a number of made-for-TV tornado films, but how many actual good tornado movies are there? Twister is the only one I can think of that is actually a good movie, and the only other one that I think even comes CLOSE to being good is Into the Storm. So I definitely feel like there's a lot of room for a tornado movie that is well-written and well-directed and has a decent budget behind it.

Should just remake.

SAW IT IN THE THEATER WITH MY NOW DECEASED GRANDMOTHER WHO THEN IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE VHS UPON RELEASE...SHE WAS FROM KANSAS AND LOVED THIS ONE...I DO TOO...SO I AM IN FOR A SEQUEL...JUST A SHAME PAXTON AND HOFFMAN AREN'T AROUND FOR THE FUN.

I really hope they film this in Oklahoma like they did the first movie. Wouldn't surprise me if they just shot in British Columbia or Los Angeles or something. That Oklahoma imagery with the cornfields added to the unique look of the first film.

This is such cool news, thanks.
