Prayers out to Moore, Oklahoma.

51 dead including children at latest count. Don't know how folks in the Midwest do it, living with something that scary.

Thankfully the death toll has been reduced to 24 (people were counted twice), but it's still devastating.

Tornadoes are terrifying and hit without warning. Anyplace you live carries risks of dangerous weather (earthquakes, blizzards, floods, typhoons, monsoons and hail), but tornadoes seem especially vicious. I'm glad I'm no longer in the Midwest.

*beep* off, don't pray, actually do something. I would know. And as far as you two are concerned, as long as you are in the US and are NOT in Hawaii, Alaska, or Death Valley, there is a chance you may get hit by a tornado.

Quick comment from a Kansas resident. Lane is correct. While a tornado CAN drop out of a super cell quickly and seemingly without "warning" the fact is you still have a condition conducive to tornado formation present to begin with, so shame on you if it drops on you seemingly out of "nowhere". The National Weather Service closely monitors the atmosphere on days when severe thunderstorms are a possibility. Living in tornado alley we know days in advance when conditions will be ripe for severe weather and when storms do develop they're quickly on top of the situation with Doppler, Skywarn, and chasers in the field. We know where the storm is, if it's severe, rotating, has a hail core, or tornadic. This isn't like an earthquake with no warning whatsoever. So yes, in a way a tornado "might" hit with no warning but it's because a person isn't paying any attention whatsoever to the conditions or warnings.

It was heartbreaking and I wonder if the houses in tornado alley are built with cellars/basements/storm cellars. I absolutely would not live in that area unless my house had such a measure.

reply

Some houses are, some are not. We have a basement, and I would not be without one.
